Futuristic Shoreline
The threat of sea level rise due to climate change is higher in the Chesapeake Bay region than in other areas of the United States due to Maryland’s naturally receding coastline. While sea levels have risen an average of six inches globally over the past 100 years, they have risen by a foot in Maryland. This combination of rising waters and sinking land puts the Chesapeake Bay region at an increased risk as global emissions continue unregulated and temperatures climb.
This multi-tiered curtain installation aims to demonstrate the three-foot sea level rise the Chesapeake Bay region is predicted to experience by the end of this century. Documentation of the installation in calm weather as well as in the midst of a storm is paired here with a map illustrating the predicted rise in waters across Maryland.
